Against the background of a portrait of the professional activity and reflexivity in the analysis of the interviews with my participants, a culturally and spiritually appropriate model of advocacy based in the discipline of Practical Theology is outlined. By recognising that advocacy appears at first sight to be a thoroughly secular occupation and fulfils a basic humanistic signposting role, voices from advocacy, chaplaincy, nursing philosophy, the relevant literature and public policy are critically correlated to present a theologically informed approach to independent advocacy.

This statutory role came in alongside the more traditional non-statutory advocacy role, which supports clients with decision-making capacity to speak up about wishes and beliefs, and to ensure that their voices are heard and actions taken to extend rights and choices.
