The Compromise had prohibited slavery in the greater part of the Louisiana Purchase and thereby temporarily put an end to the slavery question as a burning issue in national politics. The preference in 1820 was still for freedom; restrictions upon the extension of slavery were matters of political principle, just as they had been during the period of the founding. Compromise with the slave interest (allowing slavery south of the 36° 30′ line) was understood to be principled compromises with necessity.

The settling of a forest country was accompanied here as elsewhere by the occasional ravages of strange and destructive pestilences and the constant presence of malaria. Population was soon thick enough for occasional gatherings, convivial or religious, and in either case apt to be wild, but for long it was not thick enough for the life of most settlers to be other than lonely as well as hard. Abraham Lincoln in his teens grew very fast, and by nineteen he was nearly six foot four. His weight was never quite proportionate to this.

A more pleasing and more bracing view is nearer to the historic truth. The faults of a later time were largely survivals, and the later history is largely that of growth though in the face of terrific obstacles and many influences that favoured decay. The nobility of the Revolution in the eighteenth century may be rated higher or lower, but in the Civil War, in which the elder brothers of so many men now living bore their part, the people of the North and of the South alike displayed far more heroic qualities.
