1] [1] For a complete list of the Connection object's methods, see Chapter 13. 1 Opening and Closing a Connection: Implicit Versus Explicit The Connection object is used to establish a unique physical connection to a given data source. This connection defines how you can obtain, interact with, and manipulate data from the specified source. While a Connection object is always required, you can choose whether to instantiate a connection explicitly or to allow ADO to create one implicitly on your behalf.

Either way works, and there is no real benefit to using one method over another. The ConnectionString property of the Connection object has another useful function, however. Because it has read ability as well as write ability, we can use the ConnectionString property to view the ConnectionString used by a Connection object that was implicitly created with another object, such as a Recordset object, as shown in Example 4-4. Example 4-4. Close Set con = Nothing After running the previous code, the ConnectionString property of the implicitly created Connection object is printed to the Immediate window of the VB IDE.

For instance, in the previous example, you could parse the String for MaxBufferSize and see that it was set to 2048. 2 Working with Data Source Names Another way in which to use the Open method of the Connection object is for the ConnectionString to be set to a valid Data Source Name (DSN). Valid DSNs are maintained in the ODBC applet in the Windows Control Panel. This is where all of the information regarding connections is stored. Using a DSN allows you to not worry about the actual definition of the connection string in your application.
